Social work is a professional discipline the world over (except Pakistan) and social workers are mandated to help people overcome their individual/group /social problems themselves.
When Pakistan came into being, it was beyond the state resources to help the millions of the uprooted people who migrated to Pakistan to join their own group of Muslims. It was the social work concept and practice based on the religious motivations to help own brethren in trouble. Slowly and gradually, the practice of social work and public welfare gained organized grounds in this country and the government also initiated various projects public welfare in the country including the introduction of social work education in the country at University level since early 1950 s. By 1990 s and M.Phil./PhD level education started in the field of social work initiated by the University of Peshawar.
With the establishment of HEC in 2002, the opportunities for high education in social work increased and the guidance and assistance from HEC is the main source of acquiring PhD level education in social work.
This University also plans to impart this level of training in social work education.
